SUMMARY:EVENT AT CAPACITY! A Walk in the Woods: Botanizing in the Patricia Sprague Forest Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Carolina (Charlestown)\nThis FREE event has limited capacity. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BY EMAILING angela@charlestownlandtrust.org. \nJoin ecologist and Charlestown Land Trust board member Keith Killingbeck for a walk in the woods! Bill Bryson\, author of the 1998 classic A Walk In The Woods\, won’t be with us in the Patricia Sprague Forest Preserve\, but we’ll make up for his absence by botanizing throughout this 27.8-acre oasis along the Pawcatuck River. \nWhile infinitely shorter than the subject of Bryson’s book\, the 2\,184-mile Appalachian Trail\, the trail through the Sprague Forest intersects a diverse suite of plant communities as varied as upland forest\, old fields\, and floodplain forest. This diversity supports the wide variety of plant species we will see\, identify\, and talk about. On our special to-do list for this trip is to find the Indian pipe plants that should be there\, but that are not on the Sprague list yet. While Bryson never did succeed in hiking the entire AT\, we will have no trouble navigating this 1.2-mile walk in the woods. \nBe sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring bug spray and water. This event is FREE and suitable for all ages! Attendees are asked to leave their dogs at home for this walk. \nRain Date: None. Join them on a walkabout of this recently acquired property along the Pawcatuck River. On the 27 acres of conserved land\, walk through oak forests and former agricultural land bordered by old apple trees. Pass kettle ponds and indicators of long ago glaciers. Look and listen for resident wildlife: turkeys\, deer\, wood ducks\, hawks\, pheasants\, and songbirds.\nThis event is rain or shine. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
