SUMMARY:Historic Cemetery Tour: Grills Preserve
DESCRIPTION:***See registration instructions below!*** \nThere are nearly 100 historic burial grounds in Westerly\, five of which are on Westerly Land Trust properties. In this series\, we will be exploring three of these historic cemeteries. Join WLT and Larry Hunter\, local commissioner of the Rhode Island Historic Cemetery Commission and member of Rediscovering History\, Inc. for our third stop on the tour: Grills Preserve. \nLarry will walk us through “Cemetery 101” (as he calls it)\, which explains orientation and types of headstones\, the use of footstones and field stones\, and the types of materials. We will also discuss the dos and don’ts of cemeteries\, cleaning\, maintenance\, and restoration of stones. This historic cemetery is nestled in the woods. We will take a short hike on the trails that will lead us out to our last historic tour. Hike is 1 mile in and 1 mile out. \nTours are recommended for adults. Please prepare for being out in the grass and woods\, and bring bug repellant and water. Sign up for one or all three tours as each burial ground offers its own unique characteristics. \nREGISTER HERE. \nEach tour is FREE for WLT members and $10 for NON-members\, which Larry Hunter has generously pledged to donate to WLT.

DESCRIPTION:Location: Westerly\nJoin The Westerly Land Trust for an evening hike at Grills Preserve! \nThis wooded land is perfect for an outing with scenic views along the Pawcatuck River and a panoramic vista from atop Big Hill. We’ll learn about the preserve’s habitats\, animals\, and some of the interesting historical features of the land. Come along and enjoy the great outdoors with us! \nPlease dress appropriately (i.e. comfortable walking shoes/boots) for this moderate\, 2-mile walk. You may also want to bring along bug spray and a water bottle. \nThe terrain is mostly flat but there are some tricky sections that require crossing streams on large log bridges. This event is suitable for all ages and is FREE to attend. DESCRIPTION:Location: Westerly\nJoin The Westerly Land Trust at Grills Preserve to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower! We will go on an approximately 1-mile walk through the trails until we arrive at “Big Hill” within the preserve. This is an open\, dark and quiet area perfect for stargazing. This year\, we should see approximately 60-70 meteors per hour.\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the brighter meteor showers that happen every year. The 2018 Perseid’s shower is going to peak on this night and there will be a New Moon\, providing optimal viewing conditions.\nPlease note: Bring a blanket\, bug spray\, flashlight/headlamp\, and dress warmly. \nRegistration is not necessary\, but please call walk leader Donna (203-470-4566) if you are running late so she knows to wait for you.
