DESCRIPTION:Borders Farm located at 31 North Road in Foster RI is hosting “Second Sundays at the Farm” on September 8\, 2024 from noon to 4:00 PM. \nBring snacks or a picnic lunch and relax on the lawn of the historic Phillips Farmhouse. Palagi’s Ice Cream Truck will be on site all day. Enjoy family friendly lawn games like croquet and badminton. Check out our network of trails and look for a RI Walks creature on Margery’s Red Trail. There will be events throughout the day. \nEvents: \n\nProvidence Brigade Band\, a 19th century brass band playing historical music in period uniforms\, will perform live music at 2pm\nMark Luzio will give a talk on Elihu Fish and the architecture of the Phillips Farmhouse\n15 Minute Field Trips will be back with a fun educational drop in ‘Nocturnal Animals’ activity for kids of all ages to enjoy from 1-3pm\nTour the Food Bank community garden 1-3pm\nLimited guided tours of the historic Phillips Farmhouse Museum\n\nSecond Sundays events are made possible by support from Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc\, Navigant Credit Union\, June Rockwell Levy Foundation\, and the Rhode Island Foundation.

SUMMARY:FULL - Stalking the Wild Mushroom

REGISTRATIONS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED.**\nLocation: Foster\nCome to Borders Farm for a guided mushroom hunting walk\, led by Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt of the Mushroom Hunting Foundation. Ryan and Emily\, as seen in Providence Monthly\, Rhode Island Monthly and EcoRI News\, are the premiere wild mushroom experts in southern New England\, regularly conducting walks and talks for libraries\, land trusts and other community organizations. They will lead a trek around the historic Borders Farm property to identify and gather edible fungi. \nPre-Registration Required\nRyan and Emily will conduct two sessions\, one at 10:00 am and the second at 12:30 pm. Each session will last 1-1/2 hours. Cost is $10.00 per person\, pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. To register\, email 2bordersfarm2@gmail.com. Free farmhouse tours for the public will also be offered that day at 10:00 am\, 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Workshop participants are welcome to tour the farmhouse before or after each session. \nPreserving the Past for the Future\nBorders Farm was settled by the Phillips Family in the 1760’s and then purchased by the Borders family almost 100 years ago. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over two hundred acres on both sides of North Road in Foster. DESCRIPTION:Location: Foster\nFascinated by insects?  Come to historic Borders Farm\, 31 North Road\, Foster on Saturday\, September 29 for a hands-on learning experience for the whole family.  Explore the farm and discover the insects that live there in this fun and inspiring workshop on the Basics of Bugs!   \nMelissa Guillet\, an interdisciplinary art teacher and environmental advocate\, will conduct the workshop.  Melissa has been involved with both URI’s pilot Eco-Exploration Camp and the Audubon Society’s Schoolyard Science for an Urban Eco-System and was named Environmental Educator of the Year in 2012.  She continues to be recognized for her program development and dedication to environmental literacy and has received multiple recognition awards from the East Providence School Department.  \nPre-Registration Required \nMelissa will conduct one session from 11:00am to 12:00noon.  Cost is $10.00 per family\, pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. DESCRIPTION:Location: Foster\nCome on down to Borders Farm for a day of history\, hikes\, bluegrass\, and a barn sale! Borders Farm was settled in the 1760’s and has been continuously farmed for 250 years. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over 200 acres on both sides of North Road. Today\, Borders Farm\, Inc. and Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc help to keep alive Charles and Margery Borders’ dream of keeping their property as a working farm\, museum and agricultural education center. \nVisitors are invited to learn about the historic farm throughout the day. Borders Farm’s knowledgeable docents will be available to guide the public through the history and collections of the 1840 Farm House and describe how the family lived. House tours at 10:00am\, 11:00am and 12:00noon. \nJoin guided walks of the Borders Farm property\, which includes two barns\, a 19th-century farmhouse\, several ponds and pastures\, old stone walls\, livestock\, and substantial wooded areas. \nLater in the afternoon\, Borders Farm will host a Bluegrass Concert with Saddle Up the Chicken. \nAt historic Borders Farm\, you’ll never know what you’ll find. Charles Borders was a known collector of antiquities\, artifacts\, curios\, curiosities\, and collectibles. They’ve cleaned out the attics and cellars of the farmhouse and barns and will be putting items out on the lawn for a giant yard sale. Since there are farm animals\, dogs are not encouraged on the property; service dogs on leash are welcome. A clean\, permanent port-o-potty is on the premises of the main house.
