It consists of 148 acres of woodland\, rocky ridges and freshwater wetlands adjacent to the Pawcatuck River and the Boy Scout Camp. It has interesting quarry remnants\, river views\, and descent through a beautiful river gorge. Some climbing in rocky areas may be involved as the best views are from the higher elevations. DESCRIPTION:Location: Tiverton\nThe Nature Conservancy\, Tiverton Land Trust\, and Tiverton Open Space Commission invite you to explore their protected coastal forest at Pocasset Ridge.  The guided hike along the ridge and into this 600-acre tract of coastal forest with its many rock formations will be hosted by John Berg of The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island.    \nPlan to walk for 3.5 miles over rough ground\, there are some hillsides to climb.  So make sure you are well-equipped with appropriate attire!\nTravel light but there are no services or conveniences in this forest tract.  Birders especially welcome!\nReservations not necessary but the walk will leave promptly at 1:30 PM.  We will take attendance\, then\, to ensure we return to the parking area two and a half hours later with the same number of hikers! \nQuestions?\nContact the Nature Conservancy at 401-331-7110 or email John Berg at jberg@tnc.org.  For more information on the Nature Conservancy\, visit their website here and for the Tiverton Open Space Commission\, you can visit the TOSC webpage. DESCRIPTION:Location: Smithfield\nThe Smithfield Land Trust and the Smithfield Conservation Commission invite you to experience the latest poetry installation on their properties. They have poems installed in quiet places to encourage a thoughtful rest on a hike. Poetry boxes are also present at many properties. They have contributions from many local poets and artists. On the guided hike\, participants will hike to the area of the installation and be part of it with the volunteers who put it up. This is a great family activity. Wolf Hill Forest preserve is a hilly start and the hike will be about 1 mile (not handicap accessible). Wear hiking clothes\, bring bug spray\, and water. DESCRIPTION:Location: Providence\nThe Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Providence Parks Department along with RI Land Trust Days and Blackstone Go! invite you to the Hill for their annual Fall Event featuring guided hikes\, toasting marshmallows\, live music\, fire truck tour and mounted police. You can even meet the kid goats from the Providence Parks Department. Learn the history of the hill and enjoy the view of the city of Providence. Bring your blanket or chair to sit on. If you have an instrument\, feel free to bring it along to the meadow where we will all relax and enjoy the panoramic view of Providence. \nAll ages event\, but the walk is most suitable for ages 5 and up. SUMMARY:Third Thursday Hike: DuVal Trail System
DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingstown\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for a guided hike every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 am on a different SKLT trail. For September\, visit the DuVal Trail System in South Kingstown. This system of trails crosses numerous parcels protected by SKLT and DEM between 1983 and 2013. These trails feature the hill and kettle topography of a terminal moraine left by the retreating glaciers of the last ice age.\nVisitors enjoy a sweeping view of the ocean and Block Island to the south from a scenic overlook. Susanna’s Woods is noted for its stands of oak and used as woodlots for the plantation families who farmed the flat land nearer the coast. DESCRIPTION:Location: Westerly\nAvondale Farm Preserve in Westerly is a beautiful haven for butterflies\, birds\, and bats. Bird-watchers have called this preserve a hot spot for many species of birds. The hike is an easy\, flat walk through a coastal preserve with a variety of native grasses and late summer wildflowers. All ages are welcome! This event is free of charge.\nFor all hikes be sure to wear shoes appropriate for natural conditions that may include rocks\, roots\, and mud along the paths. In warmer months\, come prepared with insect repellent for your comfort. \nRegistration is not necessary\, but please call walk leader Donna (203-470-4566) if you’re running late so she knows to wait for you!
