DESCRIPTION:Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Providence Parks Department don’t want you to miss this Saturday walk with our guide from the Conservancy. Although Neutaconkanut is the only wild forest in Providence\, the hill has long been noted for its amazing assortment of trees and its history.\nDress for the day’s weather – be sure to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. This walk is free\, but we suggest a $5 per family donation to help support these events and the work of the Conservancy. No advance reservations required. Suitable for ages 5 and up. DESCRIPTION:Location: Newport\nThe Aquidneck Land Trust will open Miantonomi Memorial Tower to the public every Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm through September 2. Come to the highest point in Newport to view the city and Newport Harbor. At 30 acres\, Miantonomi is the largest city-owned park in Newport and is conserved permanently through ALT. The site has a rich history and provides large\, undisturbed woodlands in the densely developed North End of Newport.\nExplore the park’s hiking trails after you climb the tower and enjoy one of the best spots for birding in Newport! The tower itself will be open between 11 am to 2 pm. You may come and go at your leisure to explore the rest of the park. Stop by for 10 minutes to climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower or hike the trails for an hour! SUMMARY:Blackall Family Preserve Hike in the Woods
DESCRIPTION:Location: Cumberland\nCome explore and enjoy nature on a guided hike through the Blackall Family Preserve. This 132-acre Town-owned open space is co-managed by the Cumberland Land Trust. Observe a variety of habitats along trails of moderate terrain\, with some hills. The hike is approximately 2 miles and is appropriate for adults and families with children ages five and older. The trail is not handicap accessible. No bathroom facilities are available. Participants should wear appropriate boots or shoes for hiking\, bring water and apply bug repellent. Light refreshments will also be provided. The event is expected to last 1 ½ hours. Please leave your pets at home. Borders Farm was settled in the 1760’s and has been continuously farmed for 250 years. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over 200 acres on both sides of North Road. Today\, Borders Farm\, Inc. and Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc help to keep alive Charles and Margery Borders’ dream of keeping their property as a working farm\, museum and agricultural education center. \nVisitors are invited to learn about the historic farm throughout the day. Borders Farm’s knowledgeable docents will be available to guide the public through the history and collections of the 1840 Farm House and describe how the family lived. House tours at 10:00am\, 11:00am and 12:00noon. \nJoin guided walks of the Borders Farm property\, which includes two barns\, a 19th-century farmhouse\, several ponds and pastures\, old stone walls\, livestock\, and substantial wooded areas. \nLater in the afternoon\, Borders Farm will host a Bluegrass Concert with Saddle Up the Chicken. \nAt historic Borders Farm\, you’ll never know what you’ll find. Charles Borders was a known collector of antiquities\, artifacts\, curios\, curiosities\, and collectibles. This hike will be led by Hank Webster of the West Greenwich Land Trust. \nPlan to walk approximately 2.5 miles over rough ground and well-established hillside trails rated up to 4-C\, which means a good deal of significant hill climbing and somewhat difficult terrain over rocky or rooted paths. DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingstown\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for a guided hike every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 am on a different SKLT trail. For September\, visit the DuVal Trail System in South Kingstown. This system of trails crosses numerous parcels protected by SKLT and DEM between 1983 and 2013. These trails feature the hill and kettle topography of a terminal moraine left by the retreating glaciers of the last ice age.\nVisitors enjoy a sweeping view of the ocean and Block Island to the south from a scenic overlook. Susanna’s Woods is noted for its stands of oak and used as woodlots for the plantation families who farmed the flat land nearer the coast. Though the area was never cleared\, it has been continually cut for 300 years.\nAll ages welcome. Leashed dogs are welcome. There is no fee or registration associated with this event. \nThe guided walk will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. DESCRIPTION:Location: North Smithfield\nJoin the North Smithfield Land Trust for a one-day amateur photo contest to be held on the Rocky Hill Road woodland trail. Unleash your creative spirit\, and photograph anything that captures your eye as you stroll along the path (plants\, rocks\, trees\, leaves\, people\, etc.). Submit your two best original images by email (Cell phone pictures are fine). There will be four age categories: Elementary School\, Middle School\, High School & Adult. One winner from each category will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card\, Second place receives $25. Winning images and best entries will be featured in the North Smithfield Land Trust 2019 calendar. The trail is 0.7 miles\, fairly easy walking\, with some elevation. Clothing with insect repellent and adequate footwear are recommended. Water and light snack provided. No restrooms available. DESCRIPTION:Location: Providence\nThe Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Providence Parks Department along with RI Land Trust Days and Blackstone Go! invite you to the Hill for their annual Fall Event featuring guided hikes\, toasting marshmallows\, live music\, fire truck tour and mounted police. You can even meet the kid goats from the Providence Parks Department. Learn the history of the hill and enjoy the view of the city of Providence. Bring your blanket or chair to sit on. If you have an instrument\, feel free to bring it along to the meadow where we will all relax and enjoy the panoramic view of Providence. \nAll ages event\, but the walk is most suitable for ages 5 and up. No advance reservations required. Dress for hiking and day’s weather. Dogs on leash are welcome. Insect repellant is also recommended year round as a precaution against ticks which carry Lyme Disease.
