Thank you! Rhode Island Land Trusts \nIt’s the Friday after Thanksgiving and all of the food has been eaten – what is there to do next? How about a walk at one of Charlestown’s latest open space acquisitions. Join Roe LaBossiere from The Charlestown Land Trust and be one of the first to hike The Charlestown Moraine Preserve\, maintained & managed by the Charlestown Conservation Commission. Maybe you’ll get lucky and catch a glimpse of a turkey that survived the\nholiday! Walk leaves at 10 am sharp. \nThe approximately 75 acres is called a terminal moraine and marks the last advance of the ice about 14\,000 years ago\, an outstanding example of the remains of the ice age in Rhode Island. It’s 75 acres has rolling terrain with short steep hills and valleys with some of very dense remarkable stands of mountain laurel. \nA walking stick is recommended. Allow about an hour and dogs are welcome (w/pickup).Prepare for ticks w/spray & socks to pull over cuffs. Free and open to the public. No rain date. \nQuestions? How about a walk at Grills Preserve with the Westerly Land Trust? This walk on WLT’s 500-acre preserve is over primarily flat terrain often along the Pawcatuck River on clear\, wide trails. Thank you! Rhode Island Land Trusts \nNeutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Providence Parks Department invite you to get outdoors with your family on Black Friday. Make the most of this holiday season by spending time outdoors with your loved ones. This walk will be a relaxed fitness walk suitable for ages 5 and up – less talking\, more walking and\, of course\, scenic views to savor the season. \nSupported by the RI Land Trust Council as part of the #OptOutside program sponsored by REI which is closing their doors again Black Friday to encourage us all to get outdoors\, this walk is your way to demonstrate what matters the most to you! \nDress for the day’s weather – be sure to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. This walk is free\, but we suggest a $5 per family donation to help support the work of the Conservancy. No advance reservations required. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Dogs on leash are welcome. Rhode Island Land Trusts \nThe Cumberland Land Trust invites you to come enjoy a leisurely guided hike in the woods\, see the results of beaver activity and learn the interesting history surrounding the Monastery property in Cumberland. We’ll make stops along the way to identify the historical features of the property including the Monks quarry. \nThe full walk will be four miles and take about 2 hours\, however participants will also have the option of ending after 2 miles. Open to all ages; most appropriate for ages 6 and up. Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes for travel on established trails. There are some hills and trail is rocky in spots. Use bug repellant\, bring a water bottle and binoculars if you like. Bathroom facilities are available. Please note the trail is not categorized as handicapped accessible. \nAn RSVP requested\, but not required. We will walk on the Tippecansett Trail along the shoreline of Beach Pond to a high rock vista overlooking the pond. Then head west towards the state line and loop back on the Hemlock Ledges Trail and on an unnamed trail to the parking area \nThe 3 mile walk will be on trails that may be a bit muddy\, rocky\, steep or with tree roots\, and rock stepping across streams\, so wear sturdy shoes at the least. Leashed\, well behaved and friendly dogs are welcome. . This is state land and it is hunting season so everyone must wear an orange hat or vest. The Johannis Farm Nature Preserve is a combination of woodland\, fields\, swamp and marsh. The trail is a loop that takes approximately 1 hour to traverse without stopping and proceeds through woods\, out onto marshes and across open fields. \nThe trail can be wet\, so water resistant shoes are recommended. This parking area is on the southern side of Sowams Elementary School. Traveling from Bristol/Warren north on route 103\, look for the sign “Welcome to Barrington” which is on the right\, after crossing a bridge. Take the first right after the bridge onto Sowams Rd. and proceed approximately 1.5 miles to the school\, which will be on the left. Traveling south on Rte. 114 (Wampanoag Trail)\, take a left onto Massasoit Ave. at the traffic light by the white church. You will travel over a bridge and at the end of Massasoit Ave.\, turn left onto New Meadow Rd.\, then a right onto Kent St. immediately after the New Meadow Elementary School. At the end of Kent St.\, turn left and travel north on Sowams Rd. to the Sowams Elementary School which will be on the left. Turn left into the first entrance and parking is on the left. Our event host will meet everyone in that parking lot. We will wait for 15 minutes at the parking area before proceeding in carpools\, as needed\, to the trail head.
