SUMMARY:Tour the Farm at Briggs-Boesch Farm
DESCRIPTION:East Greenwich Land Trust invites you to a guided walk at a working farm! Originally purchased by John Briggs in 1672\, with structures built as early as 1704 by his son Richard\, the Briggs family owned and farmed in this area of East Greenwich (extending\, at times\, as far west as Narrow Lane) for some 180 years; the current farmhouse and the main bay of the barn are a classic example of a New England farmstead from this period. \nSince leaving the Briggs’ family control in 1850\, the Farm has had 7 owners; most recently\, the Boesch family who owned the current farm holding for almost 50 years. Besides the farm fields and varied woodland\, the property contains several historic structures and an historic cemetery. In June 2003 the farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe East Greenwich Municipal Land Trust purchased the 90 acre farm in October 2001. Currently\, the Briggs-Boesch Farm serves as the southern anchor of the Town’s greenway system\, providing publicly accessible trails throughout the property’s fields and forests. The Farm is also home to Pat’s Pastured\, a pasture-raised livestock farm operation across much of the property that promotes sustainable farming and vegetable cultivation. For more information\, please visit http://www.patspastured.com. \nThis guided walk will cover 1-2 miles over a variety of terrain. Please dress for the day’s weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. \nQuestions?\nFor any additional questions you may send an email to East Greenwich Land Trust jensuellentrop@yahoo.com You may also find out more about the trust at their website \nDirections:\nBriggs-Boesch Farm is located at 830 South Road\, East Greenwich\, RI (please park in parking lot by Briggs-Boesch white farm sign at trailhead\, across from subdivision). His father Daniel and Uncle Allin ran the mills together and the families went back and forth across the 10 Mile River via footbridge. When death suddenly took his father\, his mother moved the family to Warren and then to Benefit Street in Providence. At 18\, Peter insisted upon joining the RI Artillery\, although the family offered to pay for a substitute. Peter wrote home every Sunday evening (when not in battle) from Oct 1861 – May 1864\, 171 letters which his mother carefully saved. There are two branches of his family still in RI and they have loaned family artifacts for this exhibit to celebrate the publishing of the letters in book form after 152 years. \nPhoto by Alex Kemp

DESCRIPTION:Westerly Land Trust invites you to a special walk at a preserve which is not open to the public except for guided walks like this one. Enjoy the beautiful wetland landscape at Crandall Family Preserve this October! On this family-friendly walk\, Westerly Land Trust’s Program Coordinator Stacey Jackson\, will provide information about the preserve\, and guide us on a short walk to the wetland overlook. \nJoining the land trust for this walk is Mary Grande\, Wildlife Outreach Coordinator for RI DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. Mary will be presenting information about Rhode Island’s own ecosystem engineers–beavers! On the walk\, you’ll have a chance to see a beaver lodge\, learn about this history of beavers in Rhode Island\, and about current conservation projects. \nBinoculars will be provided to scan the swamp for signs of these secretive creatures…we may even spy some waterfowl too! Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a layer or two in case of a chilly October morning. This hike is considered easy and level. For all hikes be sure to wear shoes appropriate for natural conditions that may include rocks\, roots and mud along the paths. In warmer months\, come prepared with insect repellant for your comfort\, but it is also recommended year round for prevention of Lyme disease. \n*Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Indicating your attendance on Meetup or Facebook does not reserve your place. Don’t be disappointed\, please contact Stacey to reserve your spot today! (401) 315-2610 or email Education@westerlylandtrust.org \nQuestions? Email your questions to the Westerly Land Trust to execdir@westerlylandtrust.org or call the Trust at 401-315-260.\nFor more information on the trust\, you can visit Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Westerly-Land-Trust-141513339220639/ and their website: http://westerlylandtrust.org/ Details for this event: http://westerlylandtrust.org/event/all-about-beavers-at-crandall-family-preserve \nDirections: Crandall Family Preserve is located at Pound Road in Westerly.
