SUMMARY:PIC-WIL Nature Preserve Walk with Barrington Land Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust for a walk to PIC-WIL Nature Preserve. This 17-acre preserve of forest\, field\, salt marsh and coastal dunes on the east shore of the Providence River in Barrington. \nOnce home to a bottling facility owned by Deep Water Rock Company\, the property was donated to the Nature Conservancy by Catherine Picerelli in December of 1986 and deeded to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust in 1987\, to be preserved in perpetuity as a nature preserve. \nThe donation was made in memory of the families of Peter J. Picerelli and Clifford M. Wilson: thus the name “PIC-WIL.” Although the property is generally closed to the public due to its status as a nature preserve\, the Land Trust opens PIC-WIL periodically for guided walks. \nThe forest includes a wide variety of deciduous trees. The property is home to deer\, coyote\, fox\, weasels\, squirrels\, chipmunks and rabbits. \nPurple Martins nest here in late spring and summer. Common birds of the marsh and tidal creeks include Mallards\, American Black Ducks\, Snowy and Great Egrets\, Green-backed Herons\, Great Blue Herons\, and Osprey. Sharp-tailed Sparrows\, Belted Kingfishers and various shorebirds are other likely visitors of the wetland. \nNesting birds of the forest and its shrub border include Song Sparrow\, Carolina Wren\, Blue Jay\, Flicker\, Cardinal\, Goldfinch\, Robin\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Mockingbird\, Catbird\, Brown Thrasher and others. \nThree plants at PIC-WIL have “special interest” status in the state of Rhode Island: Creeping Spikerush (Eleocharis rostellata)\, Maritime Seablite (Suaeda maritima) and Robust Bulrush (Scirpus robustus). \nThe terrain is gentle but may be wet in places. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. You may wish to bring a walking stick or poles to assist you when crossing wet areas. \nPark on the side of Tallwood Drive (off Washington Road) in Barrington\, RI. The group will meet at the trailhead\, which is directly across from Tallwood on Washington Road\, Barrington\, RI. \nThe walk will last about an hour and a half. All ages are welcome. No dogs. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Sowams Woods Walk with Barrington Land Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nExperience Sowams Woods in the autumn\, with a profusion of fall colors and the glistening waters of Echo Lake. The Barrington Land Conservation Trust\, which owns and manages the property\, invites all ages to join this free public walk through 12 acres of forested trails. \nSowams Woods was acquired by the Barrington Land Conservation Trust in 2006 after a four-year\, two-million dollar campaign that involved widespread support from Barrington residents\, the Rhode Island Country Club (which borders the property)\, the Town of Barrington\, the State of Rhode Island\, and the federal government. \nLocated on the ancestral homelands of the Pokanokets\, Sowams Woods is rich with history and significance. During the years-long effort to protect the property from development\, leaders of the Pokanoket advised and educated the Land Trust on the property’s importance to Indigenous Peoples. \nAdvance registration is required due to limited parking at the site. The group will meet and park in the dirt parking area at the juncture of North Lake Drive and the former South Lake Drive in Barrington\, RI. \nKid-friendly. The terrain is gentle. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve Walk with Barrington Land Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust for an autumn walk to Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve. This 32-acre expanse of field\, forest\, and salt marshes lies the border of the Palmer River\, off Sowams Road in Barrington\, RI. \nBLCT will guide you through the forest trail and take you down to the salt marshes\, where you can see the effects of sea level rise in real time. The bridge which allowed circumnavigation of the site was washed out during the floods of December 2022. It will be rebuilt this fall by a team of students from Roger Williams University’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders. \nYou’ll also see the first two stages of a three-year planting program at Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, funded in part by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). Land Trust volunteers and the Audubon Youth Conservation League Team planted dozens of native trees and shrubs in 2022 and 2023\, with more planting to come in 2024. \nThe terrain is gentle but may be wet in places. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. You may wish to bring a walking stick or poles to assist you when crossing wet areas and narrow foot bridges. Dogs are not allowed on this property. \nThe walk will last about an hour and a half. All ages are welcome. You may park in the grassy lot just beyond the entrance to Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, which is located between 461 and 475 Sowams Road in Barrington\, RI. The group will meet in the parking area and walk together to the trailhead. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Walks at Norman Bird Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Stretch your legs\, get some fresh air\, and end the day with a walk in nature. Join us and explore the Norman Bird Sanctuary trails during a free guided walk every Wednesday afternoon. Norman Bird Sanctuary offers seven miles of unique trails that meander throughout a diverse array of habitats and ecosystems. Learn to spot native species\, identify plants\, and see what you find along the way. \nEstablished in 1949 Norman Bird Sanctuary is the largest contiguous preserved land on Aquidneck Island\, with 300 acres and 7 miles of trail stretching from coastal dunes to forested woodland. We foster lifelong connections between people and the Sanctuary’s rich and diverse habitats through conservation\, education\, and exploration. \nThis free public program requires no registration\, and will meet in the Norman Bird Sanctuary parking lot ten minutes prior to the walk. In the event of inclement weather\, an announcement that day will be made on our website determining whether the walk will continue or not.  Dogs are not permitted at the Sanctuary.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training with Coventry Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Anyone interested in contributing to an ongoing volunteer project is invited to join the Coventry Land Trust for a training session on bird and vegetation counts\, as well as creating fishing line collectors out of percolation tubes. The training will be led by Jenna O’del\, Associate Wildlife Biologist. \nVolunteers will learn to carry out these biological surveys\, so that they can be equipped to contribute to the projects on their own time. Volunteers of all ages and experiences are welcome! Whether a volunteer has studied biology or history their whole life\, or doesn’t know the difference between a bug and an insect\, everyone is welcome. Survey work is needed at several of the land trust’s beautiful properties. \nEmail Virginia Streeter at vstreeter@rilandtrusts.org to RSVP. \nIf you are interested in participating in this project but are unable to attend the training session\, please contact Jenna O’del directly at jodel@uri.edu.

SUMMARY:Preserving Elder Trees with the RI Tree Council
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nElder Tree Care is probably the least understood and least practiced segment of tree management. These shortfalls are disturbing. They contribute each year to the removal of thousands of older trees that deserved a better fate. This workshop provides a basic primer on the characteristics of tree aging\, older tree needs and meeting those needs. For this exercise we will examine 100+ year shade trees\, evaluating their structure and health and for determining what measures can be taken to extend their longevity well into the future. \nA park stroll looks at tree structure and its relationship to health\, maintenance\, and performance. \nDriving and parking: Proceed along Ives Road past horse stable entrance\, look for RITree sign by stone pillars. Enter the driveway and look to the right side for parking area. \nRegister here.
