SUMMARY:"Ask for Glass" with Block Island Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:The Block Island Conservancy is hosting a raffle during the Block Island Farmers Market to guess how many plastic cups are delivered to Block Island restaurants in one week in the summer. This is to educate people how much plastic waste is produced throughout the summer and encourage people to “ask for glass” when out to eat. The winner will get a basket of sustainability items from BIC.

SUMMARY:Evening Walk at Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The Rhode Island Land Trust Council is posting this event on behalf of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. For this event\, BLCT requires that you register directly with them.  Please register here. \nExperience an evening walk at one of Barrington’s rarely seen wilderness areas with the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. \nOn Thursday\, Aug. 29\, at 5 pm\, join a guided walk through the Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, a 32-acre expanse of field\, forest and wetland between Sowams Road and the Palmer River. The walk will be led by Property Steward Bill Kirkpatrick. \nJohannis Farm Wildlife Preserve is located on Sowams Road\, 0.7 miles north of Sowams Elementary School. The walk takes approximately one hour over wet and moderate terrain. We recommend you wear lightweight long pants\, sturdy shoes and socks\, and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt to protect against mosquitos and ticks. Bug spray will be available. Parking is available on site. Dogs are not allowed because of the birds and animals that make this wildlife preserve their home. \nBe aware that the primary bridge which connected the two sides of the property was washed out during a king high tide storm. You will be able to walk both sides of the property\, but you won’t be able to walk it as a loop trail. A new bridge is in the permitting phase. \nJohannis Farm Wildlife Preserve was acquired by the Land Trust in 1991 through a combination of Rhode Island and Barrington Open Space bonds and charitable donations to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust. Due to the sensitive native plants and animals on the property\, it is not generally open to the public. The Land Trust hosts several guided walks each year to enable the public to experience the property\, which has been preserved as a wilderness reserve in perpetuity.

SUMMARY:Land Trust Days 2024 Kickoff with Coventry Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join the Council and the Coventry Land Trust on Friday\, August 23rd at the Tutsch and Merrill S. Whipple Conservation Area to kickoff Land Trust Days 2024! \nThe event will feature a short speaking program\, commencing at 2:00pm\, celebrating the work of the Coventry Land Trust. The hike will begin at 2:15pm and will take visitors over the boardwalk\, through the swamp\, and along the border of Whipple. It will then pass by the meadow and along the swamp to return to the parking area. \nTutsch and Merrill S. Whipple Conservation Area is the first property acquired by the Coventry Land Trust during the early 2000s. It is over 50 acres of wetlands and pine forest\, including a red maple swamp\, vernal pools\, a grassy meadow\, and swaths of pine trees. A boardwalk goes through the swamp from the western entrance of Whipple. Beyond this\, trails are average hiking trails\, with some rooty areas\, small bridges over streams\, and pine needle covered ground. \nParking is available at the conservation area at the Sandy Bottom Road entrance.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Sturgeon Full Moonrise Walk at Mount Hope Farm
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to weather. \nJoin the Bristol Land Conservation Trust (BLCT) for a Full Sturgeon Moonrise Walk on Monday\, August 19 at Mount Hope Farm. Celebrate the height of summer with a leisurely walk to the shore field\, about 0.8 miles\, as we wait for the moonrise at about 7:58 p.m.\, sky conditions permitting. We’ll be on the lookout for wildlife on the way down\, particularly around the pond. Sturgeon Moon comes from the giant lake sturgeons that were readily caught during this part of summer. It’s also the first Supermoon of the year\, which means that it will appear bigger and brighter than the full moons we have seen so far this year. \nThe event\, which takes place at 250 Metacom Avenue\, Bristol RI\, begins at 6:30 p.m. with guests gathering in the main parking lot just below the barn. Please wear appropriate walking shoes\, and bring bug repellent\, binoculars and flashlight (for the walk back) if desired. The event should conclude by 9 p.m. \nThe cash or check only fee is $15 per person\, a maximum of $25 for families\, and free for BLCT members. Payable at door. Proceeds will benefit the conservation and stewardship / maintenance efforts of the BLCT. \nFor more information\, email BristolLandTrust@gmail.com or call Ray Payson at (401) 255-4903.

SUMMARY:Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve Walk with Barrington Land Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust for an autumn walk to Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve. This 32-acre expanse of field\, forest\, and salt marshes lies the border of the Palmer River\, off Sowams Road in Barrington\, RI. \nBLCT will guide you through the forest trail and take you down to the salt marshes\, where you can see the effects of sea level rise in real time. The bridge which allowed circumnavigation of the site was washed out during the floods of December 2022. It will be rebuilt this fall by a team of students from Roger Williams University’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders. \nYou’ll also see the first two stages of a three-year planting program at Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, funded in part by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). Land Trust volunteers and the Audubon Youth Conservation League Team planted dozens of native trees and shrubs in 2022 and 2023\, with more planting to come in 2024. \nThe terrain is gentle but may be wet in places. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. You may wish to bring a walking stick or poles to assist you when crossing wet areas and narrow foot bridges. Dogs are not allowed on this property. \nThe walk will last about an hour and a half. All ages are welcome. You may park in the grassy lot just beyond the entrance to Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve\, which is located between 461 and 475 Sowams Road in Barrington\, RI. The group will meet in the parking area and walk together to the trailhead. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:PIC-WIL Nature Preserve Walk with Barrington Land Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust for a walk to PIC-WIL Nature Preserve. This 17-acre preserve of forest\, field\, salt marsh and coastal dunes on the east shore of the Providence River in Barrington. \nOnce home to a bottling facility owned by Deep Water Rock Company\, the property was donated to the Nature Conservancy by Catherine Picerelli in December of 1986 and deeded to the Barrington Land Conservation Trust in 1987\, to be preserved in perpetuity as a nature preserve. \nThe donation was made in memory of the families of Peter J. Picerelli and Clifford M. Wilson: thus the name “PIC-WIL.” Although the property is generally closed to the public due to its status as a nature preserve\, the Land Trust opens PIC-WIL periodically for guided walks. \nThe forest includes a wide variety of deciduous trees. The property is home to deer\, coyote\, fox\, weasels\, squirrels\, chipmunks and rabbits. \nPurple Martins nest here in late spring and summer. Common birds of the marsh and tidal creeks include Mallards\, American Black Ducks\, Snowy and Great Egrets\, Green-backed Herons\, Great Blue Herons\, and Osprey. Sharp-tailed Sparrows\, Belted Kingfishers and various shorebirds are other likely visitors of the wetland. \nNesting birds of the forest and its shrub border include Song Sparrow\, Carolina Wren\, Blue Jay\, Flicker\, Cardinal\, Goldfinch\, Robin\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Mockingbird\, Catbird\, Brown Thrasher and others. \nThree plants at PIC-WIL have “special interest” status in the state of Rhode Island: Creeping Spikerush (Eleocharis rostellata)\, Maritime Seablite (Suaeda maritima) and Robust Bulrush (Scirpus robustus). \nThe terrain is gentle but may be wet in places. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. You may wish to bring a walking stick or poles to assist you when crossing wet areas. \nPark on the side of Tallwood Drive (off Washington Road) in Barrington\, RI. The group will meet at the trailhead\, which is directly across from Tallwood on Washington Road\, Barrington\, RI. \nThe walk will last about an hour and a half. All ages are welcome. No dogs. \nRegister here.
