SUMMARY:New Trail at Klutz Woodland/Sprague Farm
DESCRIPTION:This month the Coleman Trail in the Klutz Woodland section of the 1200 acre Sprague Farm was completed and marked. Come and explore the newest trails made by Glocester Land Trust Volunteers in the past year. Wear sturdy walking shoes as there is some rough terrain\, perhaps water/mud\, and a few steep slopes. Total length is about 3 1/2 miles and will take about 3 hours. \nAlong the route will be three circa 1880’s remnants of family farmhouses (Angell Sweet\, Joe Sweet\, and Smith Sprague) one with a still standing three story chimney\, corn crib\, sheep shearing pen\, and outbuildings (barns). Some of the trails are colonial era gravel roads. Numerous stone walls\, none newer than the 1850’s\, and a few granite culverts are along the route. One trail will pass through a grove of Striped Maple trees which are rare in Rhode Island\, and a glen of fragrant ferns. Several trails pass through dense mountain laurel and witch hazel. \nFriendly social dogs are welcome but they must be leashed. Walk is cancelled in the event of rain. \nThe Klutz Woodland trailhead parking area is across from 162 Joe Sweet Road. Joe Sweet Road is a narrow road off of Pine Orchard Road in Chepachet village.

SUMMARY:Historic Cemetery Tour: Grills Preserve
DESCRIPTION:***See registration instructions below!*** \nThere are nearly 100 historic burial grounds in Westerly\, five of which are on Westerly Land Trust properties. In this series\, we will be exploring three of these historic cemeteries. Join WLT and Larry Hunter\, local commissioner of the Rhode Island Historic Cemetery Commission and member of Rediscovering History\, Inc. for our third stop on the tour: Grills Preserve. \nLarry will walk us through “Cemetery 101” (as he calls it)\, which explains orientation and types of headstones\, the use of footstones and field stones\, and the types of materials. We will also discuss the dos and don’ts of cemeteries\, cleaning\, maintenance\, and restoration of stones. This historic cemetery is nestled in the woods. We will take a short hike on the trails that will lead us out to our last historic tour. Hike is 1 mile in and 1 mile out. \nTours are recommended for adults. Please prepare for being out in the grass and woods\, and bring bug repellant and water. Sign up for one or all three tours as each burial ground offers its own unique characteristics. \nREGISTER HERE. \nEach tour is FREE for WLT members and $10 for NON-members\, which Larry Hunter has generously pledged to donate to WLT.

SUMMARY:Providence Birding Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalists from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island and the Providence Parks Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership for a free bird walk in Providence on Thursday\, October 20\, from 9:30-10:30 am. \nWe are meeting at North Burial Ground\, a lovely green space near the heart of the city. There is a pond and the Moshassuck River runs along the edge\, providing good wetland habitat for birds and amphibians as well. We will gather at the gate on the east side of the cemetery\, where Rochambeau meets North Main Street. \nReach out to Lisa Maloney lmaloney@asri.org with any questions. \nWe encourage you to bicycle\, carpool or use public transit if you can. The R-line bus stops there\, and the gate is right near the bus shelter. If driving\, you can park along North Main Street. \nSome safety recommendations: \n\nDress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes.\nThe paths are paved\, but uneven in some places. The gate can accommodate a walker or a wheelchair. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the terrain.\nPlease wear a mask if you are not vaccinated or if you feel more comfortable doing so.\nWe encourage you to bring your own equipment – binoculars and field guides – so that we can limit sharing among participants.\n\nWe acknowledge that these lands we will explore are the traditional\, ancestral and contemporary lands of the Narragansett\, Nahaganset\, Wôpanâak\, and Pokanoket nations. We are grateful to these local indigenous nations for being the first to steward these lands and waters\, and for continuing that stewardship in the present and into the future. \nThese birding adventures began in 2018 as part of the Urban Bird Treaty Program\, and in 2019\, Providence was designated a Bird Treaty City. To read more about the Urban Bird Treaty and other participating cities\, visit the website and check out the Storymap.

SUMMARY:Walk Off the Turkey Hike
DESCRIPTION:To walk off all that stuffing\, please join the Cumberland Land Trust in your choice of either a 2.25 mile or 3.75 mile guided hike at the Blackall Family and Ballou Farm Preserve. The preserve exhibits numerous stonewalls\, stream crossings and a RIWalks Challenge Hay Scented Fern. \nThe longer hike will feature Cumberlandite\, only found in Cumberland and which is the official state rock of Rhode Island. There are a number of these magnetic rocks that were dropped by glaciers and jut out from the trail. \nThe shorter hike is considered to be easy with some short elevation changes whereas the longer hike is considered to be moderate because of the additional distance and larger elevation changes. \nFooting can be rocky at times so hikers are advised to wear comfortable hiking or athletic shoes. Hikers should bring water for hydration. In the event of rain\, the hikes will be cancelled. Family-friendly\, but please leave dogs at home. \nThe trailhead is located in the Dollar Tree Plaza\, 3751 Mendon Road\, Cumberland\, RI 02864 to the right of the Dollar Tree store. Plenty of parking is available\, however\, please leave the parking spaces directly in front of the stores to the customers. \nRegister on Meetup.

SUMMARY:New Trail: Woodward Rock at Sprague Farm
DESCRIPTION:New trails to explore at the 1200 acre Glocester Land Trust Sprague Farm. The easy walk will be about three miles long. The ground is a bit uneven so do wear sturdy shoes or lightweight hiking boots. It is hunting season so please wear an orange vest or hat. If you don’t have one\, blaze orange vests will be available for borrowing. \nWoodward Rock is a huge ledge rock at the edge of a field and was noted in the 1879 survey of the property. The land trust volunteers have been working through the year to create new trails in the area. The new trails are slightly narrow in places and not yet marked\, but are easy to follow. These new trails will be widened\, blazed\, (paint markers on trees)\, and signed\, in the coming months. This event is the public unveiling of these new trails. \nThe walk will showcase the miles of stone walls on this property\, along with dense mountain laurel groves\, two Sprague Farm homesites (cellar hole foundations of home and outbuildings)\, glacial erratic boulders\, country farm roads\, and Woodward Rock which few people living have ever seen. \nFriendly\, social dogs are welcome but must be leashed. \nRain date Sunday\, November 27th.

SUMMARY:Preserving Elder Trees with the RI Tree Council
DESCRIPTION:Registration required — see link below. \nElder Tree Care is probably the least understood and least practiced segment of tree management. These shortfalls are disturbing. They contribute each year to the removal of thousands of older trees that deserved a better fate. This workshop provides a basic primer on the characteristics of tree aging\, older tree needs and meeting those needs. For this exercise we will examine 100+ year shade trees\, evaluating their structure and health and for determining what measures can be taken to extend their longevity well into the future. \nA park stroll looks at tree structure and its relationship to health\, maintenance\, and performance. \nDriving and parking: Proceed along Ives Road past horse stable entrance\, look for RITree sign by stone pillars. Enter the driveway and look to the right side for parking area. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Training with Coventry Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:Anyone interested in contributing to an ongoing volunteer project is invited to join the Coventry Land Trust for a training session on bird and vegetation counts\, as well as creating fishing line collectors out of percolation tubes. The training will be led by Jenna O’del\, Associate Wildlife Biologist. \nVolunteers will learn to carry out these biological surveys\, so that they can be equipped to contribute to the projects on their own time. Volunteers of all ages and experiences are welcome! Whether a volunteer has studied biology or history their whole life\, or doesn’t know the difference between a bug and an insect\, everyone is welcome. Survey work is needed at several of the land trust’s beautiful properties. \nEmail Virginia Streeter at vstreeter@rilandtrusts.org to RSVP. \nIf you are interested in participating in this project but are unable to attend the training session\, please contact Jenna O’del directly at jodel@uri.edu.
