DESCRIPTION:Location: Bradford Village\, Westerly\nIt’s the Friday after Thanksgiving and all of the food has been eaten – what is there to do next? How about a walk with Westerly Land Trust at Grills Preserve? \nThis walk on WLT’s 500-acre preserve is over primarily flat terrain often along the Pawcatuck River on clear\, wide trails. There is a gorgeous scenic view from the top of aptly named\, Big Hill\, which requires a bit of steep climbing. \nInclement weather cancels this walk. A highlight is a brief primer on vernal ponds. Hosted by representatives of the Scituate Land Trust and Conservation Commission. \nBe sure to wear good walking shoes. This event is free and suitable for all ages — leashed dogs welcome as well! \n**While hunting is not permitted at Westconnaug Meadows\, there is a possibility of hunting on nearby properties. SUMMARY:Boots and Beer: After Thanksgiving Edition!
DESCRIPTION:Location: Pascoag\nJoin the Burrillville Land Trust for their very popular Boots and Beer event – After Thanksgiving edition! A great way to recharge and walk off a big meal on a fall evening. \nThis 3-mile walk travels along the interior of the Edward D. Vock Conservation Area\, an 86 acre property owned by the Burrillville Land Trust\, a private non-profit all volunteer land trust in the Town of Burrillville. The property is named for Edward D. Vock\, who was an orphan living in NYC. During the summers the orphanage would come up to Burrillville and go camping. Years later\, looking for a place for he and his wife and their three daughters\, Vock bought the land from Father Holland\, a pastor in the Town of Burrillville. At the time Vock purchased the property\, the land had been cleared for farming and raising cattle and sheep. Over the years\, Vock happily set out to turn the land into a forest…later becoming one of the first Tree Farms in Rhode Island! \nThe walk features rolling hills\, stream crossings\, glacial erratics and more. Good hiking shoes are required. Wear weather appropriate clothing. The land trust will bring orange blaze vest for each hiker. It is recommended that each hiker bring their own orange blaze. Water bottle and a snack may be a good idea to bring as well. Leashed dogs are welcomed. \nAfter the walk (around 3:15pm)\, we will drive to Bravo Brewing Company. Cash bar. Following the talk\, attendees will guide themselves along the preserve’s trail systems and then reconvene at 7:15pm to review our discoveries. \nTo make the walk even more interesting\, bring your smart phone to take pictures of interesting things you see along the trail and upload them to a project on the iNaturalist app and/or collect live specimens in jars/containers that you can bring along! DESCRIPTION:Location: Tiverton\n*Pre-registration on the MeetUp event is required for ALL attendees. \nJoin the Tiverton Open Space Commission for a vigorous hike exploring deep woods in the Pocasset Ridge Conservation Area of Tiverton. From cardinal flowers in the lowlands to viewing treetops from the ridge\, this walk offers many interesting features. \nThe preserve’s 600 plus acres of forest was protected by the joint efforts of The Nature Conservancy\, Tiverton Open Space Commission\, and Tiverton Land Trust. We’ll stroll through a delightful wetland\, make the climb to oak barrens on rocky highlands\, explore a rich basin of towering oaks\, then proceed on to the “cliff” overlooking a sheer\, ninety-foot drop above a red maple-yellow birch swamp. Participants must be prepared for rugged trails\, a bit of a climb\, and a totally invigorating experience in East Bay’s wildest forest. \nAll participants must wear a face covering. Be sure to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes and bring bug spray. This event is FREE. This hike is inappropriate for those under age 10\, and dogs are not permitted in the preserve. \nSevere weather will cancel this event. DESCRIPTION:Location: Warren\nNOTE: This is a drop-in style event. A member of the Land Trust will be on the beach from 12pm-3pm. You do not need to arrive at the start time! Come anytime during the 3 hr period to fly a kite! \nGO FLY A KITE! Join the Warren Land Conservation Trust for the 2nd annual kite flying event. Drop in anytime between from 12pm-3pm! You can use one of the Land Trust’s kites or bring your own. This beach looking over the Warren River has a steady on-shore breeze for just about any kind of kite. Fun for ages 3 to 103. \nJacob’s Point is a hidden gem off the East Bay Bike Path. Enjoy the beach\, watch the boats go by\, or watch the osprey\, purple martins and salt marsh sparrows. This beach is literally off the beaten path. \nJacob’s Point is located off the East Bay Bike Path 1\,000 feet south of Locust Terrace\, where there is on-street parking (please do not park beyond the bike path on this road). It also is 1\,000 feet north of ASRI’s Nature Center and Aquarium. \nWe will be practicing social distancing – we can’t fly the kites too close together anyway. We respectfully ask that if there are more than 15 people in one area of the beach\, groups move farther down the beach to remain spaced well apart. \nParticipants must wear a face covering. This event is FREE. \nRain Date: Aug. 30\, 12pm-3pm\nSevere weather will postpone this event to the rain date. September’s hike will be on Weeden Farm\, which is located on a glacial outwash plain. \nThis easy-to-walk 1.6 mile trail features pastoral views of stone walls and fields actively cultivated for hay and corn. Visitors also may enjoy views of fields managed for wildlife habitat and a large grove of larch trees. \nWear a face covering\, comfortable walking shoes\, sunblock & bug spray. It is an easy walk of about .7 mile to the shoreline. \nThe Bristol Land Conservation Trust is a small nonprofit organization. The donation of $5 per person and $10 per family will help the BLCT in its mission – to help conserve and protect the town’s valuable open space either through direct ownership or conservation easements. \nAll participants must wear a face covering. There is even a nice ‘peak’ at Point Judith Pond from a pleasant upland bluff. The trail passes through the only active farm in Narragansett. The 1-1/2-hour tour will be conducted by Frances Topping\, a naturalist\, artist and educator from Charlestown. \nAll participants must wear a face covering. In Rhode Island she has given walks and talks for the RI Wild Plant Society and art workshops for the RI Natural History Survey\, RIWPS\, and other art groups\, and talks on native and invasive plants among other topics for Master Gardeners\, RIWPS and garden clubs.
