DESCRIPTION:Location: Narragansett\nWHAT LIVES IN THE RIVER? – 9am-11am\nAll ages are invited to join Narrow River Preservation Association for this hands-on exploration of fish\, shellfish\, crabs and other inhabitants of Narrow River. We will use nets large and small to catch river creatures and examine them in touch tanks and under microscopes. Experts and guidebooks will be on hand. SUMMARY:Hillside and Loop Trail Nature Hike
DESCRIPTION:Location: West Greenwich\nThe West Greenwich Land Trust invites you to explore its 80-acre Fry Pond Conservation Area on an approximately 2.5 mile guided hike through upland forest and past rock cairns\, glacial pebbles\, classic dry-stacked walls\, and groves of wild blueberries. This hike will be led by Hank Webster of the West Greenwich Land Trust. \nPlan to walk approximately 2.5 miles over rough ground and well-established hillside trails rated up to 4-C\, which means a good deal of significant hill climbing and somewhat difficult terrain over rocky or rooted paths. As always\, make sure you are well-equipped with appropriate attire and footwear. \nTravel light but there are no services or conveniences along this trail. DESCRIPTION:Location: Foster\nThe Foster Land Trust invites you to join them for a nature hike on their Spencer-West property\, guided by botanical specialist M. Thoman. Recently\, the Youth Conservation League’s “Crew in Your Community” helped clean the trails and pond area to prepare for this Land Trust Days event. \nThis hike is appropriate for all ages with an easy half-mile walk through forested terrain and over two small footbridges to a pond. An optional 1-mile loop trail through Mountain Laurel shrub has trickier footing. For those just wanting to sit by the pond: bring a lawn chair and enjoy the surroundings! An access gate near the parking area takes you directly to the pond. Water activities are not permitted. Please\, no pets on this hike. \nThis event is rain or shine\, so dress appropriately for the weather that day. One of the featured art installations\, “Sir Loin Barbecue Bull\,” will be fired up for the first time to grill hot dogs and vegetarian options. SKLT’s sculpture trail occupies about three upland acres of an otherwise wet and forested 22 acres of protected land. The easy-to-walk trail includes 23 art installations by local artists. SUMMARY:Third Thursday Hike: DuVal Trail System
DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingstown\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for a guided hike every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 am on a different SKLT trail. For September\, visit the DuVal Trail System in South Kingstown. This system of trails crosses numerous parcels protected by SKLT and DEM between 1983 and 2013. These trails feature the hill and kettle topography of a terminal moraine left by the retreating glaciers of the last ice age.\nVisitors enjoy a sweeping view of the ocean and Block Island to the south from a scenic overlook. Susanna’s Woods is noted for its stands of oak and used as woodlots for the plantation families who farmed the flat land nearer the coast. Though the area was never cleared\, it has been continually cut for 300 years.\nAll ages welcome. Leashed dogs are welcome. There is no fee or registration associated with this event. \nThe guided walk will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. Rachel will help you identify these plants and describe their purposes and healing qualities.\nThe PT Marvell Preserve consists of maritime woodland\, coastal thicket\, and upland meadows. The acquisition of this property was the result of a cooperative effort between The Nature Conservancy\, the Little Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust\, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Sakonnet Preservation Association. \nThis is a fairly flat\, easy walk. DESCRIPTION:Location: Westerly\n**New location!** \nJoin The Westerly Land Trust on an afternoon hike through the Riverwood Preserve. This property is part of the Westerly Land Trust’s Pawcatuck River Corridor Initiative. It consists of 148 acres of woodland\, rocky ridges and freshwater wetlands adjacent to the Pawcatuck River and the Boy Scout Camp. It has interesting quarry remnants\, river views\, and descent through a beautiful river gorge. Some climbing in rocky areas may be involved as the best views are from the higher elevations. All ages are welcome! Although Neutaconkanut is the only wild forest in Providence\, the hill has long been noted for its amazing assortment of trees and its history.\nDress for the day’s weather – be sure to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. This walk is free\, but we suggest a $5 per family donation to help support these events and the work of the Conservancy. No advance reservations required. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Dogs on leash are welcome. SUMMARY:FULL - Stalking the Wild Mushroom

REGISTRATIONS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED.**\nLocation: Foster\nCome to Borders Farm for a guided mushroom hunting walk\, led by Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt of the Mushroom Hunting Foundation. Ryan and Emily\, as seen in Providence Monthly\, Rhode Island Monthly and EcoRI News\, are the premiere wild mushroom experts in southern New England\, regularly conducting walks and talks for libraries\, land trusts and other community organizations. They will lead a trek around the historic Borders Farm property to identify and gather edible fungi. \nPre-Registration Required\nRyan and Emily will conduct two sessions\, one at 10:00 am and the second at 12:30 pm. Each session will last 1-1/2 hours. Cost is $10.00 per person\, pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. To register\, email 2bordersfarm2@gmail.com. Free farmhouse tours for the public will also be offered that day at 10:00 am\, 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Workshop participants are welcome to tour the farmhouse before or after each session. \nPreserving the Past for the Future\nBorders Farm was settled by the Phillips Family in the 1760’s and then purchased by the Borders family almost 100 years ago. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over two hundred acres on both sides of North Road in Foster. Today\, Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc. and Borders Farm\, Inc. keep alive Charles and Margery Borders’ dream to preserve their property as a working farm\, museum and agricultural education center for the public. SUMMARY:Nature Walk at Haile Farm Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Warren\nThe Warren Land Conservation Trust invites you to join Benedict Gagliardi\, entomologist and Lad Coordinator at the RISD Nature Lab\, for a casual but informative autumnal jaunt through the woods of Warren. There are still insects active in the fall and plentiful signs and remnants of others that completed their life cycles in the summer. You will not only look for beets and bugs as they tread the trail\, but also galls\, cocoons\, egg cases\, interesting feeding damage\, and other signs and tracks of life. You will inevitably observe birds\, plants\, mushrooms\, and other local flora and fauna along the way. Bring a camera if you please. Participants may also learn to use the nature-documenting\, citizen science phone app called iNaturalist. Note that the Warren Land Conservation Trust has not fully developed trails on this site. Terrain may be rough and wet\, boots are recommended. \nDirections: The Haile Farm Preserve is behind the previous Fed Ex building off Market Street in Warren. From 195 East\, take exit 2 and follow RT-136 south for approx. 8 miles into Warren\, RI. Turn right onto Old Market St then another right onto New Industrial Way. There is parking available on New Industrial Way.
