DESCRIPTION:The Westerly Land Trust invites you to come explore Glacier Park’s landscape carved by enormous glaciers during the last ice age with hike leader\, Donna Anderson. The glaciers left behind kettle ponds\, kettle holes and huge boulders which are all explained on the educational sign along the trails. \nThis hike is moderate level due to hills and uneven\, rocky footing.\nSo all hikers should be sure to wear shoes appropriate for natural conditions that may include rocks\, roots and mud along the paths. The guided hike amid unfragmented forest will be hosted by John Berg of The Nature Conservancy in RI. The three conservation partners have acquired a new forest to protect for you to come enjoy. Plan to walk for 3.5 miles over rough and rocky ground\, there are some steep slopes. So make sure you are well-equipped with appropriate attire.\nTravel light but there are no services or conveniences in this forest tract. SUMMARY:How Scientists Measure and Map Change on Napatree Point - a walk
DESCRIPTION:The Watch Hill Conservancy and the Watch Hill Fire District invite you on an educational field trip at Napatree Point! At Napatree Point Conservation Area\, change is part of the ecological and geological fabric. Our stewardship of Napatree is designed to allow natural changes to occur and to minimize the adverse effects of changes caused by human impacts. Join the scientists from the University of Rhode Island as they show us how they map changes in vegetation\, wildlife\, and the underwater habitats off the Napatree shore using on-the-ground monitoring systems\, small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles\, and imagery from aircraft. This walk will be an interesting demonstration of how modern technology can be used to conserve and protect our plants\, animals\, and natural ecosystems. \nNote: The terrains are uneven\, and there will be beach sand. SUMMARY:Glocester's Steere Hill Hike
DESCRIPTION:Glocester Land Trust invites you on a guided walk of their spectacular Steere Hill Conservation Area. Starting at the parking area\, we will walk through the forest on twisting trails\, over an earthen dam\, rocky ridges\, past a shepherds hut site\, a grove of American Beech\, immense stone walls and barn foundations\, to a 27 acre meadow with a breathtaking five mile vista at the summit of Steere Hill. On the way down the hill we will visit an ancient cemetery with unmarked field stones for headstone and footstones that may date to the 1740’s. \nThe trail is a little rough\, gently rolling\, and can be muddy\, so wear appropriate shoes. At the top of the hill is a portable toilet. Leashed dogs are welcome. Bring water. Total distance is approx 3 miles. The newly opened Knight Farm Trail wends its way through woodlands and historic farm areas\, some of which are still under active cultivation. This rustic Trail crosses a short small bridge and we strongly recommend wearing long pants and using bug spray.\nWe will meet at the trailhead at Laten Knight Road and Beechwood Drive and cover the 1.5 mile loop through forest\, farm and woodland areas. SUMMARY:Meet the Trees at Briggs-Boesch Farm!
DESCRIPTION:East Greenwich Land Trust welcomes you to a guided walk featuring the trees of the Briggs-Boesch Farm. Originally purchased by John Briggs in 1672\, with structures built as early as 1704 by his son Richard\, the Briggs family owned and farmed in this area of East Greenwich (extending\, at times\, as far west as Narrow Lane) for some 180 years; the current farmhouse and the main bay of the barn are a classic example of a New England farmstead from this period. \nSince leaving the Briggs’ family control in 1850\, the Farm has had 7 owners; most recently\, the Boesch family who owned the current farm holding for almost 50 years. Besides the farm fields and varied woodland\, the property contains several historic structures and an historic cemetery. In June 2003 the farmstead was added to the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe East Greenwich Municipal Land Trust purchased the 90 acre farm in October 2001. Currently\, the Briggs-Boesch Farm serves as the southern anchor of the Town’s greenway system\, providing publicly accessible trails throughout the property’s fields and forests. \nThe Farm is also home to Pat’s Pastured\, a pasture-raised livestock farm operation across much of the property that promotes sustainable farming and vegetable cultivation. SUMMARY:2nd Sunday Hunts Mills Hike & Historic House Tour
DESCRIPTION:The East Providence Conservation Commission with the Providence County Hiking Club and the Ten Mile River Watershed Council have been asked by the East Providence Historical Society to lead guided hikes of the grounds at Hunts Mills to coincide with their monthly open house. This month’s hike is also part of the RI Land Trust Council’s 6th annual RI Land Trust Days from Aug 12 to Oct 1st. The hike will begin at 1:30 and last approximately an hour. The John Hunt House\, home of the East Providence Historical Society and a museum of East Providence history\, will remain open until 3 pm. \nThis is an easy and relaxed paced hike that is good for beginners and kids. \nThe hike follows the shore of the Ten Mile River for a bit and winds through the old fire department training grounds and amusement park. \nReservations are not required. Bailey Brook is a primary source of drinking water for Middletown and Newport residents. It also serves as a habitat for several migratory bird species. The Sweet Flag property buffers Bailey Brook\, and was protected by ALT in 2006. Jim and his students will be catching and banding migrant and resident songbird species at the Sweet Flag Preserve as part of their research on the property over several years of study. At 6:30 pm\, meet to enjoy a short walk featuring the trees of Neutaconkanut. By 7:30 pm\, we’ll be back at the meadow to watch for the full moon rising over Providence. \nDress for the day’s weather and bring a flashlight. This walk is free\, but we suggest a $5 per family donation to help support the work of the Conservancy. No advance reservations required. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Dogs on leash are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The Cumberland Land Trust invites you to come enjoy a guided hike through woods and adjacent to a swamp inhabited by beavers. Learn about how the beavers have modified this natural area and the actions taken in response by the Cumberland Land Trust. Observe some of the unique habitats located at this preserve. The trail\, which includes bog bridges\, has some hilly terrain but is not considered difficult to travel. \nThe hike will be offered at two times: 9:00 am-10:30am and 11:00 am-12:30pm. Due to site constraints\, the Cumberland Land Trust is limiting the number of participants to 30 people for each hike. Please note that a reservation via Meetup or by phone is required: there are two listings\, one for each time. Be sure to reserve the hike with the time that suits your schedule. \nThe hike of approximately 1.5 miles is appropriate for adults and families with children ages five and older.
