This year they’re serving a beloved Rhode Island tradition\, Saugys\, made in Cranston with natural ingredients for generations upon generations\, and local Whaler’s beer. SKLT’s sculpture trail occupies about three upland acres of an otherwise wet and forested 22 acres of protected land. The easy-to-walk trail includes 23 art installations by local artists. DESCRIPTION:Location: Foster\nThe Foster Land Trust invites you to join them for a nature hike on their Spencer-West property\, guided by botanical specialist M. Thoman. Recently\, the Youth Conservation League’s “Crew in Your Community” helped clean the trails and pond area to prepare for this Land Trust Days event. \nThis hike is appropriate for all ages with an easy half-mile walk through forested terrain and over two small footbridges to a pond. An optional 1-mile loop trail through Mountain Laurel shrub has trickier footing. For those just wanting to sit by the pond: bring a lawn chair and enjoy the surroundings! An access gate near the parking area takes you directly to the pond. Water activities are not permitted. Please\, no pets on this hike. \nThis event is rain or shine\, so dress appropriately for the weather that day. DESCRIPTION:Location: West Greenwich\nThe West Greenwich Land Trust invites you to explore its 80-acre Fry Pond Conservation Area on an approximately 2.5 mile guided hike through upland forest and past rock cairns\, glacial pebbles\, classic dry-stacked walls\, and groves of wild blueberries. This hike will be led by Hank Webster of the West Greenwich Land Trust. \nPlan to walk approximately 2.5 miles over rough ground and well-established hillside trails rated up to 4-C\, which means a good deal of significant hill climbing and somewhat difficult terrain over rocky or rooted paths. As always\, make sure you are well-equipped with appropriate attire and footwear. \nTravel light but there are no services or conveniences along this trail. They hope to see Monarchs fueling on Seaside Goldenrod\, Tree Swallows to Hawks\, and such migrators as Common Green Darners\, Black and Carolina Saddlebags\, and Spot-winged and Wandering Gliders—the latter of which can cross entire oceans—resting on the sand and the plants before riding the wind out of our region. After a brief Welcome & Introduction at the Barn across from the Governor Bradford House\, we will join professional arborist Matt Largess for a closer look at some of the Signature Trees of Mount Hope Farm. We will explore some of the trees around the Governor Bradford House (native\, introduced/ naturalized) and then walk down around the Duck Pond. Bristol is well known for its trees and Mount Hope Farm is no exception. We’ll learn about what makes a healthy tree\, their role in nature and about tree threats. If you’re not a tree hugger now\, you will be after a Tree Walk with Matt! \nThis easy-paced walk is suitable for dogs on leash and strollers but is not fully handicapped accessible. Borders Farm was settled in the 1760’s and has been continuously farmed for 250 years. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over 200 acres on both sides of North Road. Today\, Borders Farm\, Inc. and Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc help to keep alive Charles and Margery Borders’ dream of keeping their property as a working farm\, museum and agricultural education center. \nVisitors are invited to learn about the historic farm throughout the day. Borders Farm’s knowledgeable docents will be available to guide the public through the history and collections of the 1840 Farm House and describe how the family lived. This weekly open house will run until August 28th. \nRecorded on the National Register of Historic Places\, the beautiful Bungalow\, built in 1899\, has held numerous extravagant dances\, parties\, and celebrations. In past summers\, the American Ballet Theatre troupe used the Bungalow as their summer rehearsal site. (4) Bear right off the exit\, stay in the far right lane and merge onto RI 108 South at the intersection\, taking a right turn.\n(5) Continue south on RI 108 through two traffic lights\, after the second light\, you will see a stone wall following the road on your right. This will lead you to the Bungalow. As you get closer to the entrance you will begin to see farm signs for vegetables. You will see the barn first\, then the farmhouse; two large stone pillars mark the entrance\, slow down to turn right into the farm. As you turn up the driveway\, you will find the parking area and see the Bungalow up ahead.

SUMMARY:Evening Hike at Avondale Farm Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Westerly\nAvondale Farm Preserve in Westerly is a beautiful haven for butterflies\, birds\, and bats. Bird-watchers have called this preserve a hot spot for many species of birds. The hike is an easy\, flat walk through a coastal preserve with a variety of native grasses and late summer wildflowers. All ages are welcome! This event is free of charge.\nFor all hikes be sure to wear shoes appropriate for natural conditions that may include rocks\, roots\, and mud along the paths. In warmer months\, come prepared with insect repellent for your comfort. \nRegistration is not necessary\, but please call walk leader Donna (203-470-4566) if you’re running late so she knows to wait for you! DESCRIPTION:Location: Charlestown\nThe Charlestown Land Trust and the Charlestown Conservation Commission invite you to the opening of the Patricia Sprague Forest Preserve. Join them on a walkabout of this recently acquired property along the Pawcatuck River. On the 27 acres of conserved land\, walk through oak forests and former agricultural land bordered by old apple trees. Pass kettle ponds and indicators of long ago glaciers. Look and listen for resident wildlife: turkeys\, deer\, wood ducks\, hawks\, pheasants\, and songbirds.\nThis event is rain or shine. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring water. DESCRIPTION:Location: Smithfield\nJoin Audubon Society of Rhode Island for an introduction to mushrooms and fungus\, and learn how to identify mushroom groups and species that grow in the area. Start inside with a presentation on mushroom identification – view wild mushrooms on display that were collected from other areas\, depending on availability. Next\, venture out for a hike in the woods with an expert guide to find mushrooms growing in the wild. Afterward\, sample a couple of tasty mushroom dishes using a variety of cultivated ‘wild’ mushrooms. Please note: collecting mushrooms on Audubon properties is prohibited. SUMMARY:Third Thursday Hike: Thewlis Woods
DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingstown\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for a guided hike every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 am on a different SKLT trail. For August\, visit the DAR Trail in Thewlis Woods. Thewlis Woods features stands of eastern white pine\, scarlet oak\, and beech. Turkey\, coyote\, fisher\, and many other animals find food and shelter on this property. A 0.8-mile hiking trail built in 2006 as an Eagle Scout project\, and generously funded by the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR)\, gives the hiker access to this beautiful property.\nAll ages welcome. Leashed dogs are welcome. There is no fee or registration associated with this event. \nThe guided walk will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
