REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BY EMAILING angela@charlestownlandtrust.org. \nJoin naturalist Paul Miller for a walk at Charlestown Land Trust‘s Mill Pond Preserve to look for migrating birds. Late September/early October is the height of the annual fall migration in southern New England. \nWe’ll explore the diverse habitats at this wonderful conservation property to see as many bird species as we can. Migration is hit or miss\, so we will either have a slow morning with some local resident birds\, or we could experience a busy morning with lots of migrants that arrived the night before who will be busy feeding to refuel for the next part of their journey south for the winter. Let’s find out\, see you there! \nBe sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring bug spray and water. This event is FREE and suitable for all ages! Attendees are asked to leave their dogs at home for this walk\, as quiet is necessary for bird spotting. \nRain Date: None. Updates will be emailed to those who have registered for the event by emailing angela@charlestownlandtrust.org. \nQuestions? Email angela@charlestownlandtrust.org \nMeeting Place/Directions: Mill Pond Preserve is on Route 2 in Charlestown\, RI\, about 1/4 mile north of the junction with Route 1. SUMMARY:Soil Solarization Walk & Talk at Pic-Wil Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Barrington\nREGISTER BY EMAILING education@blct.org. \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust for a walk and talk about Soil Solarization at Pic-Wil Nature Preserve (which is normally closed to the public)! Learn about this technique used in preparation for planting a wildflower meadow. \nSite preparation is one of the most important components to a meadow’s success. Come view a pollinator meadow experiment using the soil solarization technique on a small 10’x20’ plot. \nSoil Solarization is a very effective\, environmentally friendly method to control weed growth in preparation for planting a meadow. It is done by placing clear plastic over the soil’s surface and using the sun’s radiation to heat the soil and eliminate weeds and weed seeds. View the experiment’s first year results using this solarization technique at the Pic-Wil Nature Preserve in Barrington. \nThis special nature preserve is normally closed to the public and a tour will be available at the conclusion of the event. \nPic-Wil Preserve is flat with uneven terrain. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring bug spray. Please follow tick preparedness procedure. \nDogs are not permitted at this nature preserve. \nRain Date: None. SUMMARY:Good Earth Farm Stand & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Location: Hope (Cranston)\nJoin Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) to walk\, talk and learn about their recent acquisition\, Good Earth Farm\, at the corner of Pippin Orchard Road and Scituate Avenue in western Cranston. \nThis beautiful\, certified organic farm is on the site of the historic Knight Dairy. It was purchased this past summer by SCLT from John and Joyce Holscher\, who ran the Good Earth Organic Farm and Garden Center there for the past 20 years. The Farm covers 20 acres\, 9 of which are cultivated by landless\, experienced and relatively new farmers who lease their plots from SCLT. (Because of the state’s extraordinarily high price for farmland\, most farmers who do not inherit land are unable to buy their own\, which is why SCLT created its Farmland Access Program.) \nWhat makes the Good Earth Farm truly special is the vibrant\, multi-generational and multi-ethnic mix of farmers who grow crops on the land. You can purchase some of their broad assortment of produce at the weekly farm stand on-site\, held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. (The tour is held once\, however\, on Sept. 25.) \nThis event is FREE and suitable for all ages. Leashed dogs welcome. Restrooms available. \nMeeting Place: Good Earth Farm is located at 1800 Scituate Ave.\, in Hope RI. Look for greenhouses\, and the entrance to the parking area is through the red farm gate on Pippin Orchard Road. \nRain Date: Sat.\, Oct. 2. Updates will be shared on the Facebook & Meetup event pages. \nQuestions? Post them in the Facebook or Meetup event pages! \nLearn more about Southside Community Land Trust HERE.

Come see the island for yourself – it may be gone in the next few years. \nLifejackets will be provided. Wear weather appropriate clothing in layers and shoes that can get wet. Bicycle type fingerless gloves can be used to protect hands. Bring sunscreen\, water and a light snack. \nAdults only in the land trust’s boats. \nIf you come with your own kayak or canoe\, no registration is necessary and you must provide your own lifejacket. \nRain Date: None. Heavy rain/thunderstorms will cancel the event. Updates will be shared on the Facebook & Meetup events. \nQuestions? Email WarrenLCTRI@gmail.com \nMeeting Place/Directions: The group will be departing from Kelly Street on Belcher’s Cove\, Warren. Take RI route 114 to Kelly Street.
