DESCRIPTION:Location: Smithfield\nThe Smithfield Land Trust and the Smithfield Conservation Commission invite you to experience the latest poetry installation on their properties. They have poems installed in quiet places to encourage a thoughtful rest on a hike. Poetry boxes are also present at many properties. They have contributions from many local poets and artists. On the guided hike\, participants will hike to the area of the installation and be part of it with the volunteers who put it up. This is a great family activity. Wolf Hill Forest preserve is a hilly start and the hike will be about 1 mile (not handicap accessible). Wear hiking clothes\, bring bug spray\, and water. DESCRIPTION:Location: East Providence\nThe East Providence Conservation Commission invites you to join them on a hike around Turner Reservoir and the abutting Bridgham Farm. All ages are welcome. Please be comfortable walking/hiking 3 miles on both trails and asphalt surfaces. Bug spray and sunscreen are suggested\, along with plenty of water if it is a hot day. There are no restrooms. Leashed dogs welcome. This will be a casual paced walk\, stopping often for photo opportunities. The reservoir is home to several birds including great blue herons. Bald eagles have been spotted here on occasion. \nThere is no fee or registration required for this event\, however\, the walk will depart at 9 am sharp. DESCRIPTION:Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy and the Providence Parks Department don’t want you to miss this Saturday walk with our guide from the Conservancy. Although Neutaconkanut is the only wild forest in Providence\, the hill has long been noted for its amazing assortment of trees and its history.\nDress for the day’s weather – be sure to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes. This walk is free\, but we suggest a $5 per family donation to help support these events and the work of the Conservancy. No advance reservations required. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Dogs on leash are welcome. REGISTRATIONS ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED.**\nLocation: Foster\nCome to Borders Farm for a guided mushroom hunting walk\, led by Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt of the Mushroom Hunting Foundation. Ryan and Emily\, as seen in Providence Monthly\, Rhode Island Monthly and EcoRI News\, are the premiere wild mushroom experts in southern New England\, regularly conducting walks and talks for libraries\, land trusts and other community organizations. They will lead a trek around the historic Borders Farm property to identify and gather edible fungi. \nPre-Registration Required\nRyan and Emily will conduct two sessions\, one at 10:00 am and the second at 12:30 pm. Each session will last 1-1/2 hours. Cost is $10.00 per person\, pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. To register\, email 2bordersfarm2@gmail.com. Free farmhouse tours for the public will also be offered that day at 10:00 am\, 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. SUMMARY:Nature Walk at Haile Farm Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Location: Warren\nThe Warren Land Conservation Trust invites you to join Benedict Gagliardi\, entomologist and Lad Coordinator at the RISD Nature Lab\, for a casual but informative autumnal jaunt through the woods of Warren. There are still insects active in the fall and plentiful signs and remnants of others that completed their life cycles in the summer. You will not only look for beets and bugs as they tread the trail\, but also galls\, cocoons\, egg cases\, interesting feeding damage\, and other signs and tracks of life. You will inevitably observe birds\, plants\, mushrooms\, and other local flora and fauna along the way. Bring a camera if you please. Participants may also learn to use the nature-documenting\, citizen science phone app called iNaturalist. Note that the Warren Land Conservation Trust has not fully developed trails on this site. Terrain may be rough and wet\, boots are recommended. \nDirections: The Haile Farm Preserve is behind the previous Fed Ex building off Market Street in Warren. From 195 East\, take exit 2 and follow RT-136 south for approx. 8 miles into Warren\, RI. Turn right onto Old Market St then another right onto New Industrial Way. It consists of 148 acres of woodland\, rocky ridges and freshwater wetlands adjacent to the Pawcatuck River and the Boy Scout Camp. It has interesting quarry remnants\, river views\, and descent through a beautiful gorge. SUMMARY:Climbing Pocasset Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Location: Tiverton\nJoin the Tiverton Open Space Commission\, The Nature Conservancy\, and Tiverton Land Trust for an exploration of the varied habitats at the Pocasset Ridge Conservation Area. From the cardinal flowers in the lowlands\, to overlooking treetops from the “cliff\,” this walk is sure to be a delight! \nThe property contains 600 acres of rugged forest preserved by the joint efforts of The Nature Conservancy\, Tiverton Open Space Commission\, and Tiverton Land Trust. We’ll stroll through a delightfully accessible wetland\, make the climb to oak-huckleberry barrens on the rocky highlands\, explore a rich basin of towering oaks\, then make our way to the “cliff” overlooking a sheer\, ninety-foot drop to a red maple-yellow birch swamp. \nPlease make sure you are well-prepared for rugged trails\, a bit of a climb\, and an invigorating experience in East Bay’s wildest forest – bring water\, bug spray\, and comfortable walking/hiking shoes. DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingston\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for their August 3rd Thursday hike at Crawley Preserve! \nThe trails at Crawley Preserve pass though a beautiful upland forest of beech\, oak and the occasional white pine. There are three well-marked and well-maintained trails on 99 acres straddling two towns: Richmond and South Kingstown\, with most of the property (84.2 acres) in Richmond. The Preserve was acquired in 2003 as a joint project of the Richmond Rural Land Conservation Trust and South Kingston Land Trust and funded by the Town of South Kingstown and The Nature Conservancy. \nFor more information about Crawley Preserve or to find trail maps\, please visit: http://www.sklt.org/land-we-protect/trail-maps/. \nThis event is free and suitable for all ages. If you have already registered online at the Barrington Library website\, then you’re all set! \nIf you have not registered\, but are interested in joining the waitlist\, please contact Jessica D’Avanza\, the Community Engagement Librarian at jessicad@barringtonlibrary.org.** \n  \nJoin the Barrington Land Conservation Trust and the Barrington Public Library for a twilight paddle on Hundred Acre Cove! \nCome celebrate the summer with community members as we paddle around the Cove and up the Runnins River. The paddle will begin at 5:30pm and end around sunset. We hope to get a peek at the rising moon as well! \nTo plan for the weather\, we recommend wearing clothes/shoes that you won’t mind getting wet and bringing bug spray and a water bottle. DESCRIPTION:Location: Scituate\nJoin the Scituate Land Trust for a Saturday morning walk through Lawton Farm! \nScituate Land Trust members will guide visitors around this prize conservation area near the Scituate Reservoir. Together we will cross the new footbridge on a leisurely walk on the perimeter trail around the fields and a brief loop through the woods. \nManaged primarily as a grassland bird sanctuary\, Lawton Farm has been improved recently through a Department of Environmental Management grant. The new entrance kiosk carries educational information and features bird illustrations colored on ceramic tiles by children from the Hope after school program. \nThis event is free and suitable for all ages.
