You will have the chance to explore the trails in Tiverton’s newest nature preserve\, the Pocasset Ridge Conservation Area. This will be a vigorous outing on some moderate slopes – perfect for burning off calories while checking out trails in an amazing forest ecosystem. \nThe rocky trails are geared to the pace and abilities of adults. Dress to the weather and terrain and with a fluorescent orange vest/hat if possible. (Vests will be available on site.) The trails are easy to navigate\, so young children and oldsters alike will find the walk a good way to work off that extra slice of pumpkin pie from two days earlier. The Johannis Farm Nature Preserve is a combination of woodland\, fields\, swamp and marsh. The trail is a loop that takes approximately 1 hour to traverse without stopping and proceeds through woods\, out onto marshes and across open fields. \nThe trail can be wet\, so water resistant shoes are recommended. Take the first right after the bridge onto Sowams Rd. and proceed approximately 1.5 miles to the school\, which will be on the left. Traveling south on Rte. 114 (Wampanoag Trail)\, take a left onto Massasoit Ave. at the traffic light by the white church. You will travel over a bridge and at the end of Massasoit Ave.\, turn left onto New Meadow Rd.\, then a right onto Kent St. immediately after the New Meadow Elementary School. At the end of Kent St.\, turn left and travel north on Sowams Rd. to the Sowams Elementary School which will be on the left. Turn left into the first entrance and parking is on the left. Our event host will meet everyone in that parking lot. We will wait for 15 minutes at the parking area before proceeding in carpools\, as needed\, to the trail head.

Join us for one of 2 starting times for the hike: 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. We’ll make stops along the way to see the historical Nine Men’s Misery monument and the Monk’s quarry.\nThe walk is about 2 miles round trip. Open to all ages; most appropriate for ages 6 and up. Wear comfortable walking or hiking shorts for travel on established trails. There are some hills and trail is rocky in spots. Bring insect repellant and water. Bathroom facilities are available. SUMMARY:Coastal Coves Walk
DESCRIPTION:Location: East Providence\nThe East Providence Conservation Commission invites you to join their annual Coastal Coves Walk on August 11. The walk starts at the Boyden Heights Conservation Area (on Boyden Boulevard\, East Providence). The walk includes a short stroll through the wooded trails of the conservation area and a stop at a dock that stretches into one of the coves before following the East Bay Bike Path to visit the remainder of the coves. All ages are welcome. Please be comfortable walking/hiking 2 to 3 miles on both trails and asphalt surfaces. Bug spray and sunscreen recommended\, along with plenty of water if it is a hot day. There are no restrooms. Leashed dogs welcome. This will be a casual paced walk\, stopping often for photo opportunities. The coves generally are a haven for several species of birds including great blue herons and egrets.\nThere is no fee or registration required for this event\, however\, the walk will depart at 9 am sharp. The walk will be canceled in the event of heavy rain or thunderstorm. \nQuestions? We will go on an approximately 1-mile walk through the trails until we arrive at “Big Hill” within the preserve. This is an open\, dark and quiet area perfect for stargazing. This year\, we should see approximately 60-70 meteors per hour.\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the brighter meteor showers that happen every year. DESCRIPTION:Location: South Kingstown\nJoin the South Kingstown Land Trust for a guided hike every 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:30 am on a different SKLT trail. For August\, visit the DAR Trail in Thewlis Woods. Thewlis Woods features stands of eastern white pine\, scarlet oak\, and beech. Turkey\, coyote\, fisher\, and many other animals find food and shelter on this property. A 0.8-mile hiking trail built in 2006 as an Eagle Scout project\, and generously funded by the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR)\, gives the hiker access to this beautiful property.\nAll ages welcome. Leashed dogs are welcome. There is no fee or registration associated with this event. \nThe guided walk will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. The site has a rich history and provides large\, undisturbed woodlands in the densely developed North End of Newport.\nExplore the park’s hiking trails after you climb the tower and enjoy one of the best spots for birding in Newport! The tower itself will be open between 11 am to 2 pm. You may come and go at your leisure to explore the rest of the park. DESCRIPTION:Location: Cumberland\nCome explore and enjoy nature on a guided hike through the Blackall Family Preserve. This 132-acre Town-owned open space is co-managed by the Cumberland Land Trust. Observe a variety of habitats along trails of moderate terrain\, with some hills. The hike is approximately 2 miles and is appropriate for adults and families with children ages five and older. The trail is not handicap accessible. No bathroom facilities are available. Participants should wear appropriate boots or shoes for hiking\, bring water and apply bug repellent. Light refreshments will also be provided. The event is expected to last 1 ½ hours. Please leave your pets at home. Borders Farm was settled in the 1760’s and has been continuously farmed for 250 years. The farm\, which is on the National Historic Register\, encompasses over 200 acres on both sides of North Road. Today\, Borders Farm\, Inc. and Borders Farm Preservation\, Inc help to keep alive Charles and Margery Borders’ dream of keeping their property as a working farm\, museum and agricultural education center. \nVisitors are invited to learn about the historic farm throughout the day. Borders Farm’s knowledgeable docents will be available to guide the public through the history and collections of the 1840 Farm House and describe how the family lived. House tours at 10:00am\, 11:00am and 12:00noon. \nJoin guided walks of the Borders Farm property\, which includes two barns\, a 19th-century farmhouse\, several ponds and pastures\, old stone walls\, livestock\, and substantial wooded areas. \nLater in the afternoon\, Borders Farm will host a Bluegrass Concert with Saddle Up the Chicken. \nAt historic Borders Farm\, you’ll never know what you’ll find.
